Not to rain on your parade, but it might be better to look into something like the picture below if the stairs in your grandmother''ve been using a wheelchair for 20 years and I probably know a lot about the problems that you are going to run into than most on this forum. You will have to have an elevator inspected on a yearly basis and in some cases more often. Your insurance company most likely will not cover any accidents, fire and any other problems that may occur. If someone gets hurt while riding it and they sue, you will lose in court. The suggestion that was made to have a professional install a lift in your home is great advice. I had a friend that installed an elevator in a private club and due to a malfunction a person died. My friend not only lost everything but also due to no inspection ever being performed and no permits ever obtained let alone the mental anquish he suffered for such a tradgedy went to prison for 20 years. I don''m with Rivet on this one. My mother became substantially immobile in her 80''t navigate steps. She lived alone by choice and there was no budging her on that. At a minimum, putting the essentials on one floor is a good short-term plan. And start planning for assisted living. Hate to say it but she''ll be 24 hour care. She might want a lift but it is not what she needs.

If she has trouble walking then she is in serious danger of falling, and that is a major cause of death for older (essentially) non-ambulatory folks.

Prison for 20 years!!!!!.....you could murder someone and get less than that, having been paid 20K to do the job....LOL.

BTW, your grandma at 87 might not get the full mileage out of an elevator.....the stair type chair hoist assistance would probably be the best option as it folds away when at top or bottom of the stairs, not only for the outlay, but also for when you have to remove it later, but all the future problems of just getting out of a chair are a real "going to happen" occurrence, so even walking to the elevator would be an impossibility.

Thank you Wyoming, Rivet, Wheelchair, canoecruizer and billbong for your advice and info on different kinds of commercial lifts. I was thinking about the things you all said and I decided to follow your advice. I would just look into a commercial stairway lift instead of an elevator I was planning to build. I would never forgive myself if my elevator failed and cause a serious injury or death of my grandma. I remember my dad saying "What''s worth?" so even though a stair lift is expensive I would just go that route.

Thanks again to all. I appreciate your wise advise.

Especially in your area saturated with upper/middle class retirees
I would think those rail-chairs would be a "resale item"
or possibly a short-term lease item, since the user is likely
to need it for a lenght of time that is considerably shorter
than the service life of the device, no?

Your entirely welcome, I''m happy if one of my posts actually
hits the spot this week, and for a good cause... pretty much stiking out elsewhere on here.
If I told you every post you give, I learned something new, would it help vicegrip?
